Children

The most fun for me as a parent (and now grandparent) was trying to be as crazy and creative and joy loving as my little kids were. I am a definite 7 on the Enneagram test! It’s my inside track to photographing children.

I love who they get to be! I remember one Christmas when I thought to myself “I am really going to miss being a kid, I guess I have to grow up now.” Luckily that didn’t completely happen.

I never suggest prepping children on “how to be” for the photographer. I spend time up front being with them in fun ways, being careful not to get them strictly on “performance” level but keeping them interested, even fascinated if need be.

A child fascinated, a child free to feel and be, can create the most hear-rendering moments and it’s in those fleeting moments, often just split seconds, that the gift of their childhood can be captured. Some of those are planned, some are total surprises. Some are joyful, some are thoughtful and serious. They are all priceless.

Families

Upfront let me say that I LOVE doing family portraits!

Every family is a unique combination of personalities, dynamics, age, relationships, history and the all important “Happy Factor”.

They all play a role. A pre-portrait consultation is crucial so I have knowledge of all the above. I want to know the little things that make you special — the funny things, the endearing things, the special relationships.

Nothing makes me happier than capturing “The love that binds”. Those are the images that are priceless.

The session will be fun and free but I always have your best interests in mind so if a little turn or lean will flatter more I will direct you.

I know that light is often the hero so I will carefully place you in the best light.

Certain backgrounds have light that is truly magical.

Sometimes children crash, tensions rise and you can’t imagine how ANY great images will come out — yet somehow, out of the ashes, come these beautiful images! That’s because I never give up! I’ve rescued many a session parents thought hopeless — although yours might just be as smooth as silk!

Remember, It only takes a fraction of a second to capture that surprising, stunning image that lasts a lifetime.

Groups

A big family gathering really is something to celebrate.

I love doing these and have learned that location, lighting, wardrobe and sometimes entertainment are important elements as well as intimate knowledge of the group dynamics. I have literally done hundreds of these over the years, the most successful ones being the ones that were the best planned.

Groups as large as 50 people can be delightful, fun and even spontaneous if care, patience, and the tenacity to overcome obstacles is given.

There can be distractions! Crying babies, distracted teens (and adults) sibling rivalries and elder impatience are my favorites! Have faith — I will overcome. However, It does require:

  • Extreme patience

  • A great attitude (fun!)

  • Good clear coaching

  • A location well suited for a large group

  • Knowledge of the family dynamics

  • In the end, freedom to relax, be real and have fun (sometimes to great music)

That one is the winner.

The confluence of Families is a very important event. I will devote myself to capturing it memorably.

Couples

Nothing photographs better than people in love. My rule there is: don’t get in the way!

If you are newly engaged, an “old married couple”, or just madly in love, I would consider it a privilege to photograph you. You are just so pretty to watch!

We will definitely discuss the best way to tell your story beforehand and then find just the right spot and light to tell it in!

It will be fun, relaxed and LOVEly. Just be you!
